RX 7900 XTX freezes from Windows Modern Standby

My dual monitors would freeze. Sometimes red pixels showed up, the machine beeped, and I had to hold the power button. After a reboot the AMD card was often disabled and only one screen came back. Overnight it started throwing a real bugcheck: VIDEO_SCHEDULER_INTERNAL_ERROR (0x119) while Connected Standby was in progress.

The machine

Two Dell S2725DS monitors on HDMI
Windows 11

Driver updates and a BIOS flash did not stop it. Sleep in Windows Settings was already set to Never. The machine was still going into a laptop-style sleep path.

What Modern Standby is

Modern Standby is S0 Low Power Idle, also called Connected Standby. The PC looks asleep, but it stays in a low-power S0 state with the network up instead of using old S3 sleep. Laptops like that. A desktop with a 355 W discrete GPU often does not. The 7900 XTX was failing on that power transition.

powercfg /a showed S0 was available even though S3 was not:

powercfg /a

You want to see Standby (S0 Low Power Idle). If that line is there, Windows can still park the GPU when the screens turn off.

Turning it off

Run an elevated Command Prompt or PowerShell, then:

Reboot. Check again:

powercfg /a

Standby (S0 Low Power Idle) should be gone. The box can stay awake or hibernate. It should not sneak into Modern Standby anymore.

PowerShell does the same thing:

Moving this site off WordPress

This site was WordPress. I wanted a folder of markdown that turns into HTML, with nothing to log into and nothing loaded from someone else’s server.

Claude designed the first version of that. One stylesheet. A light theme and a dark theme. An orange accent. Three fonts that ship with the site: Inter for the text, Newsreader for the headlines, JetBrains Mono for the code. The rules were strict on purpose. No client-side framework, no database, no CMS, and no inline styles or scripts. The Content-Security-Policy only allows files from this domain, so a style="" attribute or a pasted <script> does nothing in production. Fonts come from the build, not a CDN.

That first version was a small script, build.mjs. It was enough to publish a post. It was not enough once I wanted the quiet parts of a blog: resized images, a page for each tag, a full RSS feed, links on headings, highlighted code, search, and a social card per page. Those are build-time jobs. Eleventy already did them, and the posts could stay markdown. Eleventy does not run in the browser. npm run build writes the finished site to dist/. npm run dev serves it locally and rebuilds when a file changes.

A few of those pieces are worth remembering:

Search is Pagefind. Its JavaScript loads on /search/ only.
Social cards are PNGs made during the build. They are the og:image tag, not a picture on the page. The variable font used in the CSS would not render in that step, so the cards use a static Inter file.
Images in a post are normal markdown. The build makes smaller copies.
A link checker runs at the end of the build. It should fail the build for a broken link inside the site. It should not fail the build because a 2009 post links to a dead page on the public web.

Getting the old posts out was the slow part. The WordPress REST API answered 401 and 406, so that door was closed. The public sitemap and the public HTML were enough. Each post kept its original date and slug. The URL is still /YYYY/MM/DD/slug/, which is what the old permalinks were. Existing links can survive the move.

The conversion had a few sharp edges. WordPress wrapped code in highlighter markup, and a careless cleanup turned a C# sample into one long line. It also ate /// <summary> comments, because those look like HTML tags. Protect the code block first, then decode entities.

Deploy is Cloudflare Pages, connected to the GitHub repo. Framework preset None. Build command npm run build. Output directory dist. Node 20 or newer. public/_headers is the CSP and the cache rules. public/_redirects sends the old /feed, /category/*, /page/*, and /author/* URLs somewhere that still exists. A push to main publishes. Any other branch gets a preview URL.

The last step was moving the DNS so samuelhaddad.com pointed at that project. That is what replaced WordPress.

Recently I received the error while working on a WordPress Site.

Solution. Both the website and the PDF have to be served over the same protocol, in my case, SSL.

I upgraded the website to use SSL. The PDF.JS plugin and the file must be served from the https URL. I updated the page with the embedded plugin and served the file over SSL to match the application.

Fix “Another Update is Currently in Progress” WordPress error

When WordPress goes to update, it creates a lock in the database so that multiple users and processes do not attempt to edit the system in parallel. However, there are cases when this lock is created, but the update never occurs. If this happens and the lock is not released, you will be blocked from retrying until you manually clean up the lock.

The lock is created in the database in the wp_options table. You need to find the option with the option name core_updater.lock and delete the row. Then you can return to the site and run the update again.

Jetbrains Resharper Command line tools not running

Problem:

I was trying to get Resharper’s dupfinder to run from a command line script. Using Resharper’s command line tools. I keep getting the errors below.

The solution came from https://devnet.jetbrains.com/thread/460601;jsessionid=FB59ACB66FFC17A22451A99A63A1BD76 which basically says

Remove Zone.Identifier NTFS Alternate Data Stream (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dn392609.aspx) from the ZIP file before using it.

turns out it was spot on. I used 7Zip instead of windows built in Zip extractor. Everything worked after that.

Error I received:

Add a calendar on Android Emulator

After much searching this is the only way I could figure out how to add a calendar when running in an Android Emulator. This is not a new problem, many users have complained about this on the internet see http://stackoverflow.com/questions/14971158/avd-emulator-has-no-option-to-sync-with-google-calendar

The solution I came to is based off of the idea from BizTalk Maven however this does not appear to work anymore (at least not for me) because according to Google.

"Starting January 30, 2013, users, other than paid Google Apps users, won’t be able to set up new devices using Google Sync".

in other words unless you have a paid Google account, this method will not work with your Google account.

To get this to work I signed up for a free outlook.com account, and used that to add an account. Outlook.com supports Active Sync on it’s free accounts.

Steps I followed:

Sign out for free account at outlook.com
Select a Corporate Account
Enter username such as [email protected]
Select Manual Setup
Select account type of "Exchange" (This will allow us to sync with active sync)
Enter Server as s.outlook.com
Security type as SSL/TLS
Select next

If successful you will see a screen like this:

You are now done. Go test that calendar!

Visual Studio Tools for Apache Cordova Error, MDAVSCLI failed with code 8

I recently installed Visual Studio Tools for Apache Cordova CTP 3.1 in Visual Studio 2013 with Update 4 and when trying to build I kept getting the error:

The problem was that I has upgraded my version of Android SDK which was not compatible.

To troubleshoot this I turned on the diagnostic build here is how:

Go to Tools –> Options –> Projects and Solutions –> Build and Run, change MSBuild project build output verbosity to Diagnostic. Rebuild the project and post the text from output window

The output window showed the following error:

BUILD FAILED C:\Programs\SDK\tools\ant\build.xml:597: The following error occurred while executing this line: C:\Programs\SDK\tools\ant\build.xml:649: The following error occurred while executing this line: C:\Programs\SDK\tools\ant\build.xml:694: Execute failed: java.io.IOException: Cannot run program "C:\code\samh\platforms\android\CordovaLib${aapt}" (in directory "C:\code\samh\platforms\android\CordovaLib"): CreateProcess error=2,

after a little research I found out it looks like ant commands are broken in Android SDK 24.3, which cordova build is using. I downgraded to previous release (24.2.0) and ant works fine now.

I downgraded to the following version of the sdk http://dl-ssl.google.com/android/repository/tools_r24.2-windows.zip

To downgrade:

Find your Android SDK folder
Locate the "tools" subfolder and rename it to "tools1" (just to keep a backup copy of the original tools folder)
Likewise, rename platform-tools to platform-tools1
Download from google repository the SDK Tool version you want to downgrade to (for instance: http://dl-ssl.google.com/android/repository/tools_r24.2-windows.zip) and unpack it.
The ZIP file you downloaded contains a tools folder that has to be moved to your Android SDK folder.
Likewise, download the platform tools (for instance: https://dl-ssl.google.com/android/repository/platform-tools_r19-windows.zip), and extract it in your SDK folder.

ASPxDateEdit causes scrolling in Chrome

I am currently working on a project that takes advantage of some DevExpress components. Recently we ran into an issue where ASPxDateEdit caused the parent page to scroll if the control was used in an IFrame. Oddly enough this issue only happened on Chrome (and potentially other webkit browsers), but not on IE.

The only way we were able to sole this issue was to add the following css to the control

-webkit-backface-visibility: hidden;

in my case I was working with ASPXDateEdit so I added it to DevExpress’s

.dxeCalendar class.

At the time of writing this I am using DevExpress WebForms version 14.2.7 (released 22-APR-2015)

Blurry icons with AspxHtmlEditor.

Today I was working with the DevExpress AspxHtmlEditor, when I noticed that the toolbar icons were sometimes blurry, but would clear up on mouse over.

Turns out my browser zoom was not set to 100%. Setting the Zoom to 100% resolved the issue.

Today I ran into the following error.

System.InvalidOperationException: Script controls may not be registered before PreRender.

In my case I was overriding OnPreRender and forgot to include base.OnPreRender(e)

protected override void OnPreRender(EventArgs e) {

    }

Adding in the the call to base solved the issue.

Today I ran into this error when posting back on my ASP.NET page.

System.Web.HttpUnhandledException (0x80004005): Exception of type ’System.Web.HttpUnhandledException’ was thrown. —> System.ArgumentException: Invalid postback or callback argument. Event validation is enabled using in configuration or <%@ Page EnableEventValidation="true" %> in a page. For security purposes, this feature verifies that arguments to postback or callback events originate from the server control that originally rendered them. If the data is valid and expected, use the ClientScriptManager.RegisterForEventValidation method in order to register the postback or callback data for validation. at System.Web.UI.ClientScriptManager.ValidateEvent(String uniqueId, String argument)

It did not take me long to track down the problem. I forgot to add an ID to a dynamically created dropdownlist control.

Error:

An exception of type ’System.MissingMethodException’ occurred in mscorlib.dll but was not handled in user code Additional information: No parameterless constructor defined for this object.

Possible Solution:

If defining your gridview’s data source in the ASP.NET markup. Make sure the code behind’s constructor is public and has the right visibility.

In my case, Resharper suggested making the constructor protected, which this problem.

Go to Tools -> Options
Productivity Power Tools -> Fix Mixed Tabs – set to NO.
Then restart Visual Studio.

.NET Multiple Line Regex

Recently I was trying to use a Regular Expression in .NET. I was working with small blobs of text. I was trying to extract some code snippets out of some wiki markup.

The code snippets looked like:

{code:csharp|title=C#} //C# Code {code} {code:vbnet|title=vb.net} //VB.NET Code {code}

For testing purposes I was using the simplest Regex I could think of {code:(.+?){code}. After playing around it became obvious that it was not matching over multiple lines. This makes sense because the ’ .’ character matches every character except /n/r

Well it turns out you want to enable SingleLineMode not MultiMode. I know I know makes a ton of sense.

Lesson learned. Read the documentation.

MYSQL cross table update

So today update data cross table in a MYSQL database. It took me way longer than it should have. I spent way too much time trying to get my join to work only to continue getting syntax errors. So long story short. If you are doing a cross table update in MYSQL you cannot use a join. Rather you must use WHERE a simple example looks like:

UPDATE TableToUpdate, TableToPullInfoFrom

SET

TableToUpdate.col1 = TableToPullInfoFrom.col1,

TableToUpdate.col2 = TableToPullInfoFrom.col2,

TableToUpdate.col3 = TableToPullInfoFrom.col3,

TableToUpdate.col4 = TableToPullInfoFrom.col4

WHERE TableToUpdate.id = TableToPullInfoFrom.id

And I will just leave this here so I don’t make that mistake again.

Cannot import the following key file fix

This one has caused me a few hours of pain….a couple of times. It is about time I document how I fixed it.

The Error:

Cannot import the following key file: .pfx. The key file may be password protected. To correct this, try to import the certificate again or manually install the certificate to the Strong Name CSP with the following key container name: VS_KEY_ E2AEBF22AB52DD08

The Fix:

Open Visual Studio Command Prompt (It can be found in the Windows Start menu)
Type sn -i "c:\Pathtofile<filename>.pfx" TVS_KEY_ E2AEBF22AB52DD08
Reimport the pfx file into Visual Studio

The sn.exe with the –i parameter, installs a key pair from into a key container named .

Display driver stopped responding – Flash Green Screen

The Problem:

Recently I was working on a customers computer and when loading a page with a flash video on it, the video would crash.The following message was displayed in the system tray.

Display driver stopped responding and has recovered.

The machine I was working on was a Dell Inspiron n5010 with a ATI mobility Radeon HD 5470 video card running Windows 7 x64bit. After all the normal troubleshooting and making sure I had the most up -to-date drivers I still had the issue. I ended up coming up with the following solution.

The solution:

Disable Hardware acceleration by right clicking on any flash video, going to settings and unchecking enable hardware acceleration.

I hope this saves someone a head ache.

.NET High Quality Thumbnail Generation

This method is a modified version of Mike Borozdin method which I happen to enjoy very much. The biggest changes I made where to add using statements around the disposable objects such as the Bitmap and the Graphics object to avoid memory leaks, as well as a few minor changes.
